BBC News - US 'wasted $30bn on Afghanistan and Iraq' over decade

So ludicrous to epically mismanage these billions of dollars, and then nickel and dime national spending programs and threaten seniors with social security cuts, medicare cuts, national park cuts, etc. But, oh yeah, Halliburton made lots of money, even if they don't know where hundreds of millions went.
History will not treat this era in America fondly.

Completely Off The Grid

Completely Off The Grid

"...some Senators have expressed an interest in energy initiatives this fall now that the debt-ceiling debate has concluded, he said.

....At his house in the woods of western New Jersey, the civil engineer turned green energy evangelist uses fuel cells to convert the power generated by about 150 solar panels so that it can be stored in 11 hydrogen tanks about 100 yards from the house.

For eight or nine months of the year, the photovoltaic cells mounted on Strizki's workshop roof and scattered around his yard generate more than enough electricity for a full range of domestic appliances including energy-guzzlers like a hot tub and a big-screen TV in his white-sided suburban home.

For the winter months when there isn't enough solar power for domestic needs, the house draws on electricity stored in hydrogen tanks, which he converts back to electricity with fuel cells.

The technology has allowed Strizki to live off the grid since 2006 without emitting an ounce of carbon or paying a penny to the local utility.

With the recent installation of more solar panels, Strizki now generates 21 kilowatts, or about twice as much power as he needs, and sells the extra to the power company, netting him about $25,000 a year....."

Obama, Tiger, Golf and Politics - NYTimes.com

"It’s crazy what’s happening in America today: We’re having an economic crisis and the politicians are having an election — and there is almost no overlap between the two. The president needs to bring them together. But that can only happen if he stops playing not to lose and goes for broke himself. Our problems are not insoluble. We need a Grand Bargain — where each side gives something on spending, taxes and new investments — and we’re on our way out of this...."

What's next in Libya key to US politics, economy - Yahoo! News

What's next in Libya key to US politics, economy - Yahoo! News

How the GOP is trying to spin this into a bad thing is reprehensible.

This is nothing but great news, and in less than a year. GREAT news, in a situation obviously still developing.

"...The Libyan street was euphoric, Gadhafi was in hiding and the price of oil — a contributor to dangerous economic lethargy — was dipping.

'The Libyan intervention demonstrates what the international community can achieve when we stand together as one,' Obama said at his vacation retreat in Martha's Vineyard, Mass.

Obama was careful to emphasize that uncertainty remained and that Gadhafi's regime could still pose a threat....

'The American people will see this as a success because we didn't need to send troops in, didn't lose American lives and it involved others in the world who also had big interests in Libya's stability taking a bigger role,' Gibbs said.

But the administration remains aware that today's successes could turn sour. Obama called on the rebel leadership to work toward a transition that 'is peaceful, inclusive and just.'

'True justice will not come from reprisals and violence,' Obama said. 'It will come from reconciliation and a Libya that allows its citizens to determine their own destiny.'

Perry's extremist course toward presidency - San Antonio Express-News

Perry's extremist course toward presidency - San Antonio Express-News

Or, not so fast... ?

"... The good news is that it has taken less than a week for Perry's extreme views on a range of subjects to take hold in the public consciousness, even with Republican voters — helped in no small part by Perry himself.

His campaign strategy, as best I understand it, is to open up roughly one can of crazy per day....

...Among other gems, the governor has suggested that Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke, a Bush appointee, would be committing treason if he attempted to jump-start the economy again by infusing it with more paper money. He also breezily dimissed the science behind global warming. And he told a little kid in New Hampshire that we teach creationism in Texas public schools, even though it's unconstitutional to do so.

The fear now is that Perry may soon run out of topics on which to sound crazy....

...If he keeps going at the current pace, Perry will save reporters at the national level the trouble of reading his book, “Fed Up!” which contains more outlandish ideas. But there remains enough infatuation with Perry's superficial charms to make reading the book necessary.

If Republican voters are smart, that'll be enough to abort Perry's presidential ambitions. When elderly voters turn to page 62 and realize that he thinks Social Security has been a failure “by any measure,” they might become a good deal less infatuated with how he looks in cowboy boots and jeans...."

Sounds fuckin' ridiculous.

Music, Activism and the Peruvian Cabinet

Susana Baca, Peruvian Musician and Culture Minister - NYTimes.com

The beautiful vision of the artist. Will politicians evolve? Can they match this vision and integrity?
Susana Baca - more like this please!

A lot of music, a lot of food seems like paradise. This seems like it's very doable on this planet. Can't we do this? Shouldn't we all be thinking about doing this, more like this, increasingly, all the time? Let's do that.

"Success was a long time coming for Susana Baca, the Afro-Peruvian folk singer who was recently named minister of culture for the new populist government of President Ollanta Humala of Peru. She is the first black member of the Peruvian cabinet and the first musician to hold the position....

Now 67, Ms. Baca has never been a member of the political or social elite of Peru, where racial and class divisions run deep, though for decades she was an outspoken advocate for Peruvian blacks. Rebuffed as a musician, she founded the Instituto Negrocontinuo in Lima to preserve black folklore and music....

Q. You have never moved in the circles of governmental power in your country. When you were a girl, was it even possible for a black woman to dream of becoming a minister?

A. Not just when I was a girl. It was only a short time ago that we managed to become respected, to have status. Among common people there is this mentality, and this we have seen in the social networks during the second round of the election of President Humala. There were terrible, racist things said on the networks. Racism against Indians. Strong racism. It was regrettable and sad that in this country there still are people who despise blacks and Indians and natives of the Amazon....

Q. You were forced to leave by Katrina. How long were you there?

A. I went up for about a month. I arrived for the celebration of Louis Armstrong’s birthday, and there was a lot of music, a lot of food. It seemed to me I was in paradise. All of a sudden the hurricane came, and everything was transformed...."

A lot of music, a lot of food seems like paradise. This seems like it's very doable on this planet. Can't we do this? Shouldn't we all be thinking about doing this, more like this, increasingly, all the time? Let's.

Even Warren Buffett SAYS: Stop Coddling the Super-Rich - NYTimes.com

Stop Coddling the Super-Rich - NYTimes.com

OUR leaders have asked for “shared sacrifice.” But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.

While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as “carried interest,” thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they’d been long-term investors....

I know well many of the mega-rich and, by and large, they are very decent people. They love America and appreciate the opportunity this country has given them. Many have joined the Giving Pledge, promising to give most of their wealth to philanthropy. Most wouldn’t mind being told to pay more in taxes as well, particularly when so many of their fellow citizens are truly suffering.

Twelve members of Congress will soon take on the crucial job of rearranging our country’s finances. They’ve been instructed to devise a plan that reduces the 10-year deficit by at least $1.5 trillion. It’s vital, however, that they achieve far more than that. Americans are rapidly losing faith in the ability of Congress to deal with our country’s fiscal problems....

...But for those making more than $1 million — there were 236,883 such households in 2009 — I would raise rates immediately on taxable income in excess of $1 million, including, of course, dividends and capital gains. And for those who make $10 million or more — there were 8,274 in 2009 — I would suggest an additional increase in rate.

My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress. It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice."

The 'fiery' Iowa presidential debate: Winners and losers - The Week

'The GOP
The telling moment came when Baier asked the candidates whether they would accept a deal from President Obama with $10 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax hikes, says Joshua Greenman at the New York Daily News. Remember: Three out of four Americans support tax increases on the super-rich as part of a plan to reduce the deficit. And yet, not a single Republican candidate said they'd accept that incredibly favorable deal. It makes the GOP look incapable of finding someone who really wants to lead a deeply divided nation. "And these people criticize Barack Obama for failing to unite the country?"'

gulfnews : London riots symptoms of a deeper malaise

Capitalism, when tilted to benefit the top of the pyramid, must level behavior to bring up the basement.
Else the foundation weakens, and will crumble and burn up the system.

"Government needs to work with community leaders to deal with poverty and inequality"

"But police action is not the whole answer. These riots can only come from people who feel that society has failed them, and the grim effects of the recession are biting deep into the structure of society. This is where Cameron's coalition government will need to find a new way to energise the inner cities, and set them back on the path to prosperity."

White House adviser blames tea party for downgrade - Yahoo! News

White House adviser blames tea party for downgrade - Yahoo! News

Woot, they it is. Concisely stated.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House adviser is blaming the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating on tea party Republicans, whom he says were unwilling to compromise on how to reduce the federal debt.

The adviser to President Barack Obama, David Axelrod, tells CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday that the decision by the Standard & Poor's credit agency to downgrade the U.S. from AAA to AA+ for the first time was strongly influenced by weeks of standoff between Democrats and Republicans over the debt.

Axelrod calls the action, in his words, "a tea party downgrade" and says it's clearly on the backs of lawmakers who were willing to see the country default to get their way.

Axelrod also criticized GOP presidential candidates for not speaking up in favor of compromise.

Hudson River: Hip, Sustainable, Green

Hudson River Valley Draws Brooklynites - NYTimes.com

This is a groovy example of modern, sustainable, desirable growth. Love it!

'Instead, you could argue, it’s a new chapter... updated for the Twitter era and based around a vision of sustainable, human-scale agriculture; manageable towns that are neither giant cities nor cookie-cutter suburbs; a $4.7 billion tourism industry; and the mountains, valleys and rivers of one of America’s unspoiled places.

“We’re in the early stages of a green economic revitalization of the Hudson Valley,” said Ned Sullivan, president of Scenic Hudson, which half a century ago was at the heart of an epic battle to save Storm King Mountain, spurring on modern environmentalism.

“The land is being preserved,” he said. “Waterfront parks are being created. Water supplies are being protected. There’s a green economy that’s being born....'

The Wrong Worries - NYTimes.com

The Wrong Worries - NYTimes.com

Where was growth supposed to come from? Consumers, still burdened by the debt that they ran up during the housing bubble, aren’t ready to spend. Businesses see no reason to expand given the lack of consumer demand. And thanks to that deficit obsession, government, which could and should be supporting the economy in its time of need, has been pulling back.

Now it looks as if it’s all about to get even worse. So what’s the response?

To turn this disaster around, a lot of people are going to have to admit, to themselves at least, that they’ve been wrong and need to change their priorities, right away.

Of course, some players won’t change. Republicans won’t stop screaming about the deficit because they weren’t sincere in the first place: Their deficit hawkery was a club with which to beat their political opponents, nothing more — as became obvious whenever any rise in taxes on the rich was suggested. And they’re not going to give up that club.

The point is that it’s now time — long past time — to get serious about the real crisis the economy faces. The Fed needs to stop making excuses, while the president needs to come up with real job-creation proposals. And if Republicans block those proposals, he needs to make a Harry Truman-style campaign against the do-nothing G.O.P.

Bolsa Chica restoration gets $100,000 from Walmart | bolsa, chica, land - News - The Orange County Register

This isn't bad. Walmart is trying to sweeten the pot as they apply to build another store in the area.
But their idea to protect an acre of natural land for every acre a Walmart store occupies has some merit.

We have to think this way if mankind is going to continue to develop, to evolve on the planet without suffocating out natural resources, species, crops, weather patterns -- and ultimately us.

Debt Deal: GOP Non-Compromise Will Fuck Them In The Future

Video: US debt crisis: Shouldn't take near catastrophe for Congress to do its job-Obama - Telegraph

The GOP non-compromise -- shunting middle-class and lower-class America and completely protecting the Bush-tax code wealthy and non-tax paying uber-companies -- is going to come back and bite them on the ass.
I think moderate America is going to ask for a divorce from the GOP next election, in a big way.
Holding one's breath and non-compromising, while risking America's default(!), is a low, extremely dangerous way to keep your ideologies and special treatment intact. It put our country's reputation and stability at risk. It's shameless, reckless, heinous behavior by elected officials charged with protecting the common good. They should be ashamed of themselves, and most Americans will have trouble looking at them tomorrow. Looking at them on a ballot, and that stink now associated with their party, it's hard to imagine someone pulling the lever. They may have won the day, but I am nearly certain they have lost their way and turn in the House.

Sunset, Venice 12/20/2012

Sunset, Venice 12/20/2012
I've been thinking some about the Winter Solstice, the Mayan end of the 30,000-year-cycle on 12/21/12.

What if in fact the world did end? Even though this probably will not happen, to live consciously it is honest for us to take a bit of an inventory.

Am I happy with how I've lived my life? (Yesterday, I thought mostly yes, with some areas for improvement, as below.) Are there changes I would make?
Would I have tried to forgive those that were hostile or disappointing to me?
Would I spend more time with those I loved the most, telling them that, feeling that more?
Would I be happier, grateful for what I have, what I've experienced, the joy, the beauty in this world?

Maybe the answer is yes to all of the above.
So this time can serve as a point of rebirth for all of us. If we think about it.

Because somewhere along the line I realized I think maybe mankind deserves it. !
The way we are killing each other, killing the planet.
How selfish we are, and snotty to those around us. Petty, competitive. Why is this? Do we have to behave this way? (I say no, it greatly detracts and misdirects energy from the full-time celebration in which we could engage, the great multi-cultural, multi-rhythmic dance we can sustain here.)

Maybe God or the Great Universe is fed up, and will pull the rug out from under us.
Don't think I can say we could blame Him/Her/It.

But it probably won't happen. (Probably not! This time.)

Still we are finite on this ride.

It is a time to think, am I happy with how I've lived my life?
Hopefully most of us can say yes.

For the part of us that have a little worry, a little sadness....
This is the time to be present.
This is the time to be the person you want to be, that can die at peace, that can hope to every day be able to look yourself and the Universe in the eye and say, how beautiful, smiling, and thank you. Let's do that.
